I got to sit and watch as the pale sunrise spilled light over the tops of the trees in our garden. I began to think about how much I liked this time of day with its contrasts of angled light against darkness. And it occurred to me that I would not have realised the beauty of one without the other. And I understood why Adam and Eve sinned. They had never seen "evil". They did not know what it was! They did not know what its horrendous presence would bring! And so they were unconcerned when led astray. God knew, when he created us in freedom, that this was a potential result. But he loves creating - and he loves life and freedom! And so he did not hold back. But once "evil" had arrived, he knew it would have to run its course - so all his creations would see for themselves how devastating it was. So they would never want it in existence again! Because with freedom comes choice. And that must stand. But once we've seen the darkness of "evil", his hope is that we will always choose life.
