Under His Wings...

There are vivid and terrible stories about mother birds who will sacrifice themselves in the face of danger in order to save their babies. I'm not sure how many of them are true, but I do know that they are constantly alert for any sign of threat, at which they will call out a sharp warning, bringing those chicks running to the safety they provide under their wings!

There is a moment in Jesus' life when he looks forward in time at the city of Jerusalem, filled with people he loves, and is filled with sadness over the destruction that he knows will soon be their lot. And he speaks out these words “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me." (Matthew 23:37)

This is one of the most beautiful images of God and his heart for us in my mind. He wants to gather us under his wings of comfort and protection! He can see what is coming for us, and wants us to come to him and be safe!!! He even sacrificed his own life for us!! And his heart aches when we won't come. And he can't save us. Run to the shelter of his wings!!! He loves you and wants life for you!! "Abundant life" - his words! And you will live in his goodness forever!!
