I've always loved people's eyes. Shakespeare once said that our "eyes are the windows to the soul". Many people see that as saying that what we see, we drink in to feed who we are in the depths of us. And there is truth in that! We become like what we focus on.
But it works the other way too! As a theatre nurse (OR nurse), we often have our faces completely covered, with only our eyes visible. It's amazing how much can be conveyed just with them! We can have silent conversations that way! And often do 😄.
A person's eyes speak volumes to me about who they are! There are those with crinkles around them that tell me they laugh a lot. And the eyes themselves speak to me of kindness, calm, warmth, and happiness - or hardness, disdain, sadness and pain. There are those who are very guarded and untrusting. And those who are open and welcoming. Those that dance and sparkle. And those that seem flat and lifeless.
Now I know that circumstances bring different expressions to those eyes - those that appear sober and deeply serious in one moment, may be the same eyes bordered by laughter lines! But we become very good at assessing the depths of a person's soul by what we read in their eyes. Especially over time. Our brain picks up every small nuance and adds it to the bank of knowledge stored for that person. Our eyes speak volumes!
I miss my Dad's eyes. He had his serious times - but there was a sparkle and glow in them that I miss, especially when he was welcoming you home, or sharing some silly story 😄. You knew he genuinely enjoyed your company! One day I'll see those eyes again. That will be special.
But do you know who's eyes I want to see more than anything? They're eyes that will have so much love and knowing in them that I suspect I will break down sobbing. They're eyes that changed the lives of people they touched on this earth. They saw, and loved, in Jesus, the soul of one so deeply beautiful that it changed the course of their lives forever!
I've seen those eyes in my reflections on the stories of his life here. I can only imagine they're way more beautiful than anything I've seen in my mind. And one day I will see those too. And it's what I want more than anything.
