I read something recently that was beautiful. I can't even remember who wrote it, but it went something like this. The Sabbath is viewed as many things - a requirement, a statement that God owns creation, a reminder that he saves us from slavery, a day of rest because he says so. But it also says something about our value as humans.
We find our value in the things we do with our time - being creative and productive with our lives. Time spent doing nothing is seen to be "unproductive", and particularly in this day and age, is looked down upon. We think it's our "doing" that makes us worth something! Afterall - how do we introduce ourselves? Usually with a title or description of what we do! That gives the other person a sense of how important we are! Or not...
But in giving us a day in which he calls us to just stop... and rest, God is telling us that our worth is not in what we do, but in who we are! And that he values the time he gets to share with us! That we are precious to him because we are his! And we are worth his time! So stop...! Value the precious moments he's given you to just be loved for who you are, not what you do! And realise your worth to him. It changes your whole perspective.
