We were meant to live in a world grounded in love. And that love is something else! If you look at the way Jesus represented it, it is deep, pure, selfless love! And so powerful! It drove him to live a life of poverty to reach those who thought him inaccessible! And to go through death in its most horrible form, in order to smash our graves and bring us freedom!
Now that level of self-sacrificing love would seem to be exhausting, and totally undoable for us! Except for this... If every single person in the whole world was living this way - outpouring this love to those around them and lifting others up - everyone would be filled with all they needed! And this world would be the close-knit, supportive community it was intended to be!
But we live for self. Self-love. Self-promotion. Self- actualization. Self-protection. And the more we do that, instead of being more filled and able to give, this method leads to a more fractured and fragmented society.
That's not saying that the self-sacrificing love we were created for does not still exist. We see it in those who care for our children and the others in our community who depend on nurturers. But it exists in little pockets. It is not the pervading network of support it was meant to be! And so those nurturing ones often become burnt out, as their supportive feeds are missing.
One day this world will again be as it should be. Love will be the power that feeds and sustains all. No longer will there be abuse and rape and murder and hunger and isolation. That old system will be gone. I, for one, am looking forward to that day. But until then, with all the brokenness in and around us, I am so very grateful for the constant love that pours from my God's heart into mine, feeding the depths of my soul, so that I can reach out with the love he intended. ❤️
