The Advocate

I was wondering why Jesus had to be our advocate, which suggests he had to stand between us and God's anger at us, when Jesus came to show us God's heart - that he and God are of one mind - to save us! It didn't make sense. And then God dropped a thought into my mind.

Like any judge in our land, if his judgement is to be trusted at all, it must follow the laws and penalties set. They cannot just randomly decide to start pardoning everybody! That would not be seen as justice to the victims! Nor would anyone take their role seriously!!

God set laws in motion that are good - and are reflected in our own laws! They are laws that protect! Inherent in those laws are penalties for going outside of them. In this case, he is life - and within his law is life! Anything outside of them naturally incurs death.

God did not want us to receive that penalty! So between them, he and Jesus, created a plan, designed to save us from the death we had brought upon ourselves, without dishonouring the law he stood for. Jesus took on the penalty that came with breaking the law of life, so that we could then stand before our God and law maker with a clean slate.

It is not because of God's anger against us that Jesus stands between us. It is because God, by nature, must always act honourably, even while wanting to save us. And this plan, provided both.
