From His Rib
I find it interesting that, whilst God spoke everything else into existence, he formed creatures and man himself, from the dust of the earth and then breathed his life into them! Man was a work of art! Clay formed in the master potter's hands! And then animated in a way we cannot replicate!
And then, woman was made for the man in a completely unique fashion! God placed man into a deep sleep, and removed a part of him - a rib bone. Then, with an ability only his, God formed that rib into a beautiful partner to share his life, animated by that life spark that he alone can give!
There is always a significance to the specifics in these stories. So I was intrigued by the mention of the rib. Firstly - that she was made from Adam and not directly from the dust. She was meant to remain deeply a part of him - and not something that he walked over.
And then the symbolism of the rib. Now I know I've read articles about this before but the points are worth re-noting. God chose a rib. Next to Adam's heart. Not a foot bone to be trodden on or to be looked down upon. Not a skull bone, superior in any way. This partner was to be cherished. Covered by his protective arm. As she was to support and nurture his heart. They were to be team mates. Working side by side with equality. He, the strong, protective provider. She the enduring strength and warmth of his home.
Now when things went downhill with the curse of sin in our lives, this beautiful picture of togetherness became damaged too. But the original intention was something mutually supportive and deeply connected. Side by side, together, they were one.
