Puppet on a string?

I read something this morning about how everything happens in our life for a reason - that it's all in God's plan for us. And that disturbs me.

While it is true, in the sense that God works towards the ultimate goal of saving as many as possible, he values your freedom so highly that he allowed the risk of "sin" entering this beautiful world he'd created!

We are not puppets on a string, dancing to the will of the Almighty! He doesn't have our whole lives mapped out for us! We get to make decisions and choose our own way in life! He might help us with that if we ask, but he doesn't make those choices for us!

The hardships we face along the way - they're usually the result of someone breaking the rules that he's given to us, showing us how to live in harmony with all things! And sometimes it's just part of the chaos we've inherited from this "sin" thing we allowed into our world, that God is hard at work trying to eradicate!

God doesn't go about "making" the bad things in our lives happen. And he hasn't promised that if we are his, he will protect us from all of them either! He has promised to never leave our side, and to pour comfort and strength into us as we go through them. And he will turn those bad things around and work them for good, for us, and in us. But our whole lives are never planned out for us by him!

And placing the blame for hardships that happen to us, upon him, by saying he gives them to us to deal with and learn from, is not fair either. That is not his way. God is good. God is love. God is present and faithful. And God is light - there is no darkness in him! Jeremiah 29:11 NIV - "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." And he believes in your freedom to choose so much that he died for it.
