Not yet time...

I was watching The Chosen series last night. It finished on the story of the wedding of a family friend at Cana. I thought it portrayed very well the reason Mary might have felt compelled to coax Jesus into carrying out his first public miracle, even though he made it clear to her that it wasn't yet time.

Jesus knew that as soon as this ability became publicly known, he would be thrust into the frenzy of mob craziness, with all its adoration, hatred, expectation, manipulation and misunderstanding, that would lead to his place on the cross. He really wanted some more quiet time to gently lead and teach those who were following him, till they better understood who he was, and his true purpose.

If only Mary had known what she was thrusting him into with her prodding. I wonder if she would still have insisted. Jesus turned water into wine at that wedding out of love and respect for his mother, knowing where it would lead. I wonder if we sometimes try to force God into things, when it would be much better for us to wait...
