There is a palm tree that stands at the middle of my back fence. This morning it is bathed with golden light. It's fronds dance in the wind. As I watch it my mind is caught with the thought that Jesus would have watched them too! They're a natural part of the scenery in the middle east.
I wonder, as he watched them, if he could see in his mind's eye, the joyous procession into Jerusalem, where the people lined the streets waving palm branches, thinking he was riding to become king and lead them to freedom from Roman oppression. They did not know then, as he did, that he was riding to his end. Or that as exuberantly as they proclaimed him messiah, these same people would vehemently deny him, calling for his death!
Such a roller coaster of events and emotions in such a tiny space of time. Easter weekend evokes powerful extremes. Highest hopes. Deepest darkness. But the end is incredible triumph!!! He won!!! And his victory is a gift - to you. But like any gift, it's only any good to you if you take it.
