I'm sitting outside enjoying blue skies and sunshine after some very wintry days. It's still quite cold though, so I'm wrapped in a fleecy blanket. I can hear our big heating unit cut in for a while and still I notice the sound of bird calls filtering through the drone. It reminds me of a similar awareness on the way to work one morning - the hum of engines all around me, windows wound up to exclude the fumes - and yet the bell call of a tiny bird penetrating through it all! (I wonder how many of those I have missed along my way?!!) It amazes me how such a tiny creature can make a sound strong enough to defy all those things resisting it! I'm not really sure how it does it. It may be something to do with the frequencies of the sound and how they interact with the glass? But whatever the mechanism, that little song reaches my ear with crystal clarity! And it teaches me something. Through the hum of life and living, with all its bustle and intent, God's quiet voice can still ring clearly. Like birdsong though, it can easily be overlooked in our single-minded focusing. We need to train ourselves to listen. The beauty breaks through - but do we hear it...? Photo credit Dr Kristal Cain
