There is an episode in season 2 of The Chosen, where the disciples are busy discussing who they are and where they've come from, while Jesus continues to heal those who have come seeking his help. It is evening, and they are all tired, and not sure of what they are doing. They were expecting a different "Messiah".
And their conversation degenerates into a sniping session towards those in the group against whom they held the greatest resentment - those who had caused them pain in some way. Matthew, the tax collector, for instance, who had worked with the Romans in over-taxing their people. He was seen as a traitor, and others in the group could not understand how Jesus had chosen him!
And as the accusations and venom flew, footsteps are heard approaching, and an exhausted Jesus passes them, with no mention of what they are doing. He simply bids them goodnight, and stumbles to his bed. And the episode finishes with silence, and the sound of crickets, with each of those participants dwelling on the contrast between their own behaviours, and that of their Rabbi. Their heads bowed in shame.
One of the most powerful endings in the show so far. And it makes us reflect on who we are as his followers right now. And are we so very different...?
