Childish Wonder

This morning I woke before dawn and slipped into my egg chair to watch the morning begin. As I looked around my garden, I was surprised and puzzled to see little glowing lights towards the top of the tree near me. At first I thought there were a bunch of little creatures up there looking at me, their eyes reflecting the light from our porch. But they didn't blink. And as I looked at the tree beyond it, I noticed silvery strands along the top edge of that tree too. All very sparkly and fairy-garden like! And I felt the sense of childhood wonder at the beauty of new things.

In my adultness, I decided it was the street light reflecting from the damp edges and droplets on the leaves. That made sense. But still I loved my little fairy-light gift. And I thought about how Jesus said we need to become as little children, or we won't be able to accept or become a part of what the Kingdom of God is. I know that he meant we need that simple, innocent trust of a child. Not the jaded disbelief of adults. But I get the sense that this joyful wonder of children might also be a part of it.

Maybe that's why we like to travel so much! To see the "new" that takes our breath away! To again experience the wonder of a child! I remember when I went to Cambodia and first saw fireflies! A new experience for me as we don't have them here in Australia! And I was so excited to see those little dots of blinking light!

God made this world so rich and diverse! I think he wanted us to experience that innocent wonder! Over and over! And yes - I think it's part of the Kingdom experience. May you have your little gift of "new" today - and may you allow yourself to experience it with the wonder of a child. ❤️

(Wish I could have captured it, but my camera couldn't cope with such low light)
