How did Mary know Jesus would be able to do something about the wine at the wedding? The thought struck me as I read the story, and I began to play with the possibilities...
I'm sure he'd always been her helper - her kind-hearted one who had always jumped in to help fix things. She'd heard the angel and seen the response to his birth. These things she had kept in her heart - and pondered on them. She'd been reminded of who he really was when they lost him in the temple. Somehow they'd lost sight of that a bit and he'd become just their boy in their minds. But in that moment he restored to them who he was. And she'd seen him reach the age when priesthood roles began. She'd watched as he began to take on his own interns.
The Bible doesn't say if he'd done any hidden miracles through the years - the bleeding wound that might have stopped somehow - the lamb that somehow made it through the night. It could have been something along those lines. Or it could have been miracles openly performed that were not recorded. The Bible tells us there were many more miracles performed than were written as there was simply not enough room to tell them all! Or maybe there was none of that - she somehow just knew...
Whatever the reason, she trusted him. She knew he cared about a friend's humiliation. And she brought the problem to him - and then left it completely with him. And he honoured that trust. And somehow the servants caught hold of that trust that was in her and followed through with his instructions, even though they seemed to make no sense. And common water became the finest wine.
Get to know the heart of God. Know his kindness and compassion. It will give you a trust in him that he will take those tough things you bring him, and make something beautiful of them - even while nothing might seem to make sense. And know you can leave them with him. Not worry about them anymore. Because he will take care of it. His way.
