The trust of a child. How sweet they are when they slip their hand into yours. When they run to you and wrap their arms tightly around you. How they trust you to take care of their needs. To catch them as they throw themselves into the water! It never occurs to them that you might fail them (unless they've learnt by experience). They believe what you say with utmost certainty. And they love their world with you in it!
Trusting God is a hard thing when you've grown into a cynical and wary adult. We have learnt by then, that people are not always there when we need them. That what they say is not always true! And it's a scary process then, to let the walls down and allow a person access to the deepest parts of us. To trust them to be there in our need.
Jesus said something addressing this. 'And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.' Matt 18:3 Only when we allow ourselves to let down our defences and wariness, and trust in him, and what he says - implicitly - like a child would; only then will we be able to experience the peace and joy of his kingdom, or even to believe it exists!
