Our life is like a piece of string cut to fit perfectly around a drawn circle, which represents all the elements included in our lives - work, family, friends, health, fitness, relaxation, enjoyment, spirituality, sleep etc. The string cannot stretch as we cannot extend ourselves beyond our limits of time and resources.
We can choose, if we wish, to excel in one particular area, but it will be at the cost of connection with some other area of our lives - i.e. the string can be pulled outside of the circle at a particular point, but it will pull away from that circle at others. The shape will become distorted and unbalanced - no longer the perfect form of a circle.
We can choose which areas will be impacted by the cost, but we cannot eliminate the effect of focusing ourselves increasingly on one area of our lives. And like a tyre which has spent too much time in one spot, the distortion to the shape of our lives can cause bumpiness to our journey.
It is good to find that place of balance in our lives, where all things receive proportionate attention, without neglecting the others. Then our lives will flow more smoothly and we feel a sense of wholeness.
