The Little "Rocks"

There is a story about a rock and shifting sands. They are both foundations for the building of a home. They represent what we choose to build our lives on. One is rock-solid, no matter what life throws at it. The other is slave to the elements.
I've often thought that the sand represents the not-so-great pursuits in life - wealth, status, success (whatever that may be), excessive fitness goals, indulgent living. But God whispered a thought to me this morning.
Each tiny grain of sand is, in itself, a tiny "rock". They aren't necessarily poor things to reach for or to have in our lives. Like loved ones - partners, family and friends. A rewarding job! Financial security which offers the ability to build up those around us! Good health to live life fully!! These are all good things and goals to have in our lives! And just like the rock, in times when life is good, they can be a supportive foundation for our lives. But then comes the next bit of the story - the storms.
Life is not known for being predictable and reliable. It throws huge curve balls at us out of nowhere. When tragedy strikes - when the job falls through, when our partner is taken, when cancer attacks - suddenly those supportive grains of sand get eroded from our foundation, and our secure little house begins to crumble.
Our lives need to be built on something more secure than the precious good things we hold to. They are not permanent here. One by one life can, and will, take them from us. Our perfect little castle will crumble away.
There is only one thing that we can build our foundation on that will never fail. God never changes. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. When all else here is slowly eroded, he can never be taken from you. With him as the rock solid base of your life, you can weather the loss of everything else.
The storms will come. They will bring damaging force against your very being. Those who have only built who they are on the sand they hold precious, will eventually lose it all. Only the rock can never be taken. If you build your life on him, you will survive the storms.
