Written in the Dust...

Jeremiah 17:13 "LORD, you are the hope of Israel; all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the LORD, the spring of living water."

Someone opened my eyes this week about this verse in relation to Jesus writing in the dust at the scene where a woman caught in adultery was thrown at his feet for judgement.

These men would have well known this verse and imagery, and while many have speculated on what Jesus may have been writing that caused them to all slink away, from the oldest to the youngest, perhaps he was simply writing names. Maybe just first names. Maybe just enough to prod their conscience. And it was very effective!

When he finally stood to his feet, not an accuser remained! And he sent her on her way, giving her a chance for a new start. And those writings in the dust? They just blew away. Never meant to be permanent. Room for change there too!

The more I look, the more I see! They have forsaken the spring of living waters, so all they have is dust!! No life grows there!! It is all futile outside of him!! Dust in the wind. That's all that is ours if our lives aren't written instead into the rock!
